Marjane Satrapi's memoir, told in graphic format, will teach you more about the modern history of Iran and its people than any history book.

Persepolis is about growing up in Iran during cultural and political upheavals, in the midst of war, and of trying to be an intelligent, creative, and rebellious woman in a country in which such qualities can land you in jail, even get you executed.

Marjane's story is a revelation, more so for the kinship I feel with her - she could be me, or any woman I know.

Parts funny, witty, horrifying, sad, and amazing - all of it brilliantly told in black and white comic strips.

Ooh! Looks good. Where did you find it?
ReplyDeleteI saw the movie last month. It follows the comics very accurately and was itself very good.
ReplyDeleteCara-I knew that there was a movie but I didn't know about the book until my radical feminism club chose it for September. I don't usually read graphic books but this one was just amazing.
ReplyDeleteAlec- Now that I'v read the book, I can finally see the movie! I'm glad that it's faithful. There's so much material to work with. I'm very interested to see what they do with it.
Radical feminism club.....
ReplyDeletewhy does that name bug me?
why do we have to be radical to be understood, respected, equal?
I definitely want to read it. It looks amazing.
Thanks for posting it, you radical feminist, you!
Brenda- I understand what you mean. It's an online book club and I guess I missed it when we were voting on a title. It's actually Radical Feminisms - which could be tongue in cheek. We're also in Goodreads.
ReplyDeleteBut don't let that stop you from reading this book! I hope you enjoy it--
This book sounds interesting. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
ReplyDeleteI've heard nothing but good stuff about this graphic novel. This is the first time I've seen pictures. Great stuff.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your thoughts on this one.
