"What you see here is the sum of centuries of books that have been lost and forgotten, books condemned to be destroyed and silenced forever, books that preserve the memory and soul of times and marvels that no one remembers anymore."
"Article one: the first time somebody comes here he has the right to choose a book...
Article two: upon adopting a book you undertake to protect it and do all you can to ensure it is never lost. For life...
Article three: you can bury your own book..."
Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Angel's Game
This is the book that I would want to find in the Cemetery-
When I was a little girl and first learned to read, my favorite place was the library of the Catholic school I attended. It was accessed by a winding marble staircase and if you looked over the balustrade, you would become dizzy with the seemingly neverending spiral to the first floor. Enclosed in a glass case of the library where the special books, hardcovers. The only one I remember ever reading from this glass case was a book with black ink illustrations and a yellow fabric cover. It was about dolls that came alive at night.
I don't remember anything else- the title, the author, whether it was even a good book. But it made enough of an impression on me that I can still recall that the pages were tea-colored with age; it was already an old book by the time I got to read it and the language was archaic. I don't know if it is the book itself that I long for or the childhood it represents.
What would you wish to find or bury in the Cemetery?

ReplyDeleteI really like the way your write. Very poetic. I actually think I'd love to either find or bury would be something by Joseph Campbell. I'm not sure which book yet, however.
Good read. I do not know the answer to your question.
ReplyDeleteCompliments, awards... My head is quite turned today!
